Introduction

This summer, I was blessed with a fantastic opportunity to visit one of the oldest and most sought After tourist destinations in South America, Cuzco…I had a great time, and since going, I’ve been asked by many friends and family, what is it like? And honestly, it is one of the most fascinating cities I’ve ever been to. However, to address these questions, I am writing this article to help you if you like me, also analyze this location as a possible vacation. Come with me today as we discuss the rich history of this fantastic city and why it has become such a widely desired tourist location.

Origins of Cusco

Cusco, also referred to as the administrative capital of the Inca empire, is a large town located in the Southwestern part of Peru within the Andes mountain along an ancient lake bed not too far from Machu Pichu known as Humantay, Tullumoy, and Chuncul. This town has an altitude of about 3500 meters and a population of about 500,000. According to local legends, the Inca empire flourished here around 1400CE-1500CE. Thereafter, it became one of the largest Spanish empires in the Americas and the most established. Towards the peak of its development, Cusco was said to be one of the wealthiest countries in the region, with numerous gold and Obsidian Monuments. Today Cusco is listed as a world heritage site.

Who were the Inca?

The Inca were said to have kingdoms that ranged from modern-day Ecuador to present-day Chile. This brazen culture from South America had a rich history of astronomical technology and irrigation techniques that were not only incredibly advanced for their time but still practiced throughout the region today. The Inca were a mesoamerican group that existed in South America.

Why should you visit Cusco?

  1. City Architecture

Cusco is a magnificent and prosperous city with a fantastic culture and breathtaking architecture. This city has pre-colonial ruins that can be seen almost throughout, from its streets to buildings and even along its outskirts. Some of these structures are dated 800 years old and, as such, provide tourists with an excellent opportunity to see the peak of Incan architectural glory. Some great locations in and around the city include Sacsayhuman and Machupichu, among many others.

2.) Food

Another reason every traveler should make this town a destination on their bucket list rotates around the food culture in this part of Peru. Cusco is home to some of the tastiest and most sought-after traditional dishes, which have come to include things like ceviche, empanadas, ‘’CUWI”(Guiune Pig), and many others. In addition, Cusco is home to several acclaimed modern restaurants offering everything from steaks to gourmet burgers. Cusco should be on every food seeker’s list because this city is one of the most cosmopolitan in the entire country.

3. Tourism

Whether looking for glamorous art galleries, museums, fantastic Food, or thrill-seeking outdoor activities, you can find a little of everything in Cusco. This city is recognized for various internationally recognized world heritage sites and unique and spiritual activities, ranging from Spa to amusement parks. I recommend visiting a few of the recommendations below.

4. People

This city has locals who speak mainly two different languages. The first is Spanish, and the second is a local indigenous language said to be told by the Inca, Quechwa. Like many other cities in Latin America, Cusco is a heavily religiously influenced community, with almost 70% of the entire population being devout Catholics. Nevertheless, Cusco is the one city with the most significant amount of people practicing the old religion of the Inca. People in Cusco are warm, charming, and usually very welcoming of tourists. They all do their best to ensure all outsiders visiting their city have a fantastic time.

5. Safety

Cusco is widely considered by many as not only one of the highest-located cities in South America but one of the safest. This city is incredibly safe and has crime and violence levels that are pretty much non-existent. However, things like pickpocketing and theft can still happen occasionally. In general, most tourists who visit this city claim that they never felt safe or insecure at any moment or time in their time here. What’s more, if there is any unlikely turn of events, the city has around 20 police stations located all over the city.
