Green, clean, and serene. These are but a few words that come to mind when I think of Costa Rica! Over the 2023 New Year, I had the pleasure of visiting one of Central America’s sought-after tourist locations. Costa Rica is a nature lovers’ paradise as it boasts everything from Stunning beaches to the finest dining. However, since I returned I have been asked by many friends and family,”..so what is it like? Is it cheap? Are the beaches truly as beautiful as claimed?”. The list goes on, and as such I decided to make this honest review addressing these questions to help you make a more knowledgeable decision if you are eyeing this location as a possible holiday location. Hope you like it!!

Where is Costa Rica?

So this was the first thing a lot of people asked me,’’ Where is it exactly?’’ Costa Rica is located on an Isthmus connecting North America to South America. It is bordered by Nicaragua to the North and Panama to the South. Costa Rica is one of seven countries in Central America accompanied by Belize, Panama Nicaragua El Salvador Honduras, and Guatemala. It has a population of about 5 million its capital is called San Jose and is located in the heart of the country.

Its busiest and most accessible airport is called Juan Santamaria and is located just a couple minutes outside the capital. Fun fact In Costa Rica, streets are not named using names but by the distance between that street and the next landmark. Spanish is the official language and the people are said to be descendants of the Maya, A pre-colonial civilization that lived in the region almost a century ago.

What was it like?

Costa Rica has to be on every traveler's bucket list as it hosts a variety of different outdoor and indoor activities that cater to the needs of almost everyone. Whether you are looking for that nice beach with a nice view of the ocean, or maybe you are looking for an Adrenaline-packed ATV tour almost everything can be easily sought after. Whilst we were there we had the pleasure of spending three days in San Jose.

Spending the majority of our time visiting the National Museum, sightseeing, fine dining, and attending guided tours. We were even lucky enough to visit the famous Island of Tortuga. This Island was said to be famed for its history of pirate activity, wildlife, and adorable turtles.

Comparatively, the city of San Jose boasts a modern and elegant architecture yet still maintains its integral Spanish design with it being a former Colony. What’s more, San Jose is host to several world-renowned restaurants which include the likes of Restaurante Grano de Oro, Franco, and Sapore Trattoria.

After saying farewell to the capital we headed off to Tamarind. A famous beach town renowned for its surfing community and a wide variety of Music Festivals, Art showcases, and whale sitings. Nevertheless, the beaches in Costa were honestly some of the most beautiful I think I have ever seen. Every sunset felt like such a special moment requiring nothing but a moment of tranquility and awe.

From surfing to swimming, clubbing to fine dining we would spend the next 5 days in Tamarindo experiencing the pristine beauty of Tamarindos beaches, the spectacularity of its embrasive local community as well as the large abundance of its friendly wildlife. Another thing that was however quite a pleasant surprise was the fact that although the official language in Costa Rica is Spanish a vast majority of locals can speak English, this means that if you are an English speaker communicating with locals will not be a problem.

Was it Expensive?

So I guess this is probably the most anticipated question, prices are expensive, and honestly, even though most people would tell you it depends on factors, either way…it is, and here’s why. Costa Rica was surprisingly expensive, although the nationally used currency is the Colon a vast majority of places accept the dollar due to the vast presence of the United States citizens through tourism or immigration.

As a result of this, generally, compared to some other Central American countries, Costa Rica can be relatively more expensive due to its popularity as a tourist destination and its higher standard of living. However, budget-friendly options are available, especially if you’re willing to stay in hostels, eat at local sodas (small eateries), and use public transportation.

Tourist areas and popular destinations tend to be more expensive than rural areas. Additionally, activities such as guided tours, zip-lining, and entry fees to national parks can add to the overall cost of your trip. It’s always a good idea to research and budget accordingly based on your preferences and financial situation.

Is it safe?

Costa Rica is safe! One of the safest in Central America. Yes, you heard that correctly not only is this tropical country one of the cleanest and environmentally friendly states on the planet but, it is also one of the safest. However even though most visits to Costa Rica are trouble-free, it’s always wise to exercise caution and stay vigilant, just as you would when traveling to any destination. Additionally, consider purchasing travel insurance to cover any unexpected emergencies during your trip.

Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, an adrenaline junkie, or simply seeking a tranquil escape, Costa Rica beckons with its endless possibilities. So, as you bid farewell to this captivating destination, take with you the spirit of pura vida and the promise of future adventures in this remarkable land. Until we meet again, may Costa Rica’s beauty and warmth continue to inspire and rejuvenate your soul. ¡Hasta luego, Costa Rica!
