In my life, I’ve been fortunate enough to embark on some truly challenging outdoor adventures. From trekking the renowned mountain Celaque in Honduras to navigating the rugged terrain of Guatemala’s volcano Actenango, I’ve faced my fair share of physical and mental tests. But let me tell you, nothing quite prepared me for the grueling ascent of Cotopaxi in Ecuador.

Ascending Cotopaxi was a physically demanding journey unlike any other. The steep inclines, unpredictable weather, and high altitude presented formidable obstacles at every turn. Yet, despite the exhaustion and hardships, there was an undeniable thrill in pushing myself beyond my limits, fueled by a lifelong fascination with scaling heights and embracing the breathtaking views that await at the summit.

From my early days spent climbing trees at our family vacation home to my adulthood pursuit of mountain conquests across North, Central, and now South America, my passion for adventure has remained unwavering. At age 26, I’ve been fortunate enough to explore some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes our planet has to offer.

If you, like me, are drawn to the wonders of nature and seek the thrill of embarking on unforgettable journeys, I invite you to join me today as I share my firsthand insights and recommendations on how to organize and conquer an expedition of this magnitude while ensuring your safety and well-being every step of the way. Whether you’re a seasoned nature enthusiast or a curious traveler eager for a new and exhilarating experience, let’s embark on this adventure together.

Ascending Cotopaxi

Standing at the base of Cotopaxi, this towering behemoth of a volcano, it felt as though I was staring up at a giant, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness swirling within me. Knowing this climb would push me to my limits, I couldn’t help but feel drawn to the challenge.

As we began our ascent, the air thinned, and each step felt heavier than the last. The wind whipped around us, carrying a chill that seeped into our bones. But as I looked up at the snow-capped summit, determination set in.

One thing I didn’t expect was the impact the altitude, cold, and physicality of this trek would have on my body. It’s funny how things work out sometimes — I originally wanted to hike Chimborazo, but without fully understanding the necessity of training beforehand. It was only because my partner convinced me that I had changed plans, and I’m grateful she did because I highly doubt my body would have been able to tackle Chimborazo without proper training.

As I made the ascent up this volcano I remembered the days spent exploring the outdoors as a kid, climbing trees, and feeling like I could touch the sky. That same sense of wonder and adventure drives me now, propelling me forward even when the going gets tough.

The weather beamed, with clouds rolling in and out, and the temperature dropping immediately. It served as a reminder of nature’s power and unpredictability, but also its beauty and awe-inspiring majesty.

Nevertheless, despite the challenges, we pressed on, fueled by the desire to conquer this mountain and experience the incredible views waiting at the top. When we finally reached the summit, standing there breathless and exhilarated, we knew it was all worth it.

Cotopaxi may be a formidable foe, but it’s also a testament to the indomitable spirit of human adventure and the thrill of pushing yourself beyond your limits.

Recommendations

This was honestly an amazing experience, and I would recommend it to anyone, as long as you keep a few things in mind:

1. Training: This hike took us the entire day and was incredibly demanding physically. So, before taking part, I would recommend some regular strength and endurance preparation. Several people we traveled with experienced health-related issues as a result of being unprepared.

2. Bring Snacks: Even though most tour companies provide lunch and breakfast, it’s always best to bring some extra snacks just in case. No one knows your body like you do, so having that extra energy boost can make a big difference.

3. Read Reviews: Before choosing one of the tour companies, do a bit of research online about them. It doesn’t require a lot of effort, but you’ll be able to make a good assessment of what to expect from the tour company, whether it’s good or bad. This will enable you to make a more informed decision.

4. Comfortable Shoes: Bring a pair of warm and comfortable shoes. Not having the best equipment at times can be the deciding factor in how enjoyable a trip is. Make sure the shoes you use are warm and comfortable, as they can greatly affect your overall experience.
